Myths and Facts about Cancer (Part 2/3)

Fact :

1. Cancer is not contagious, however some of the cancers are caused by bacteria/ viruses which can spread from human interactions. 

Certain types of the human papillomavirus (HPV) have been known to cause cervical, anal, and some kinds of head and neck cancers. Hepatitis B and hepatitis C are viruses that increase the risk of developing liver cancer. Bacteria like H. pylori can cause stomach cancer.

it is important to know that these viruses and bacteria's can spread from person to person but the cancer they cause can not be spread to other persons. 

2. In spite of the fact that having a family background of cancer can increase your risk of developing cancers, but estimated 4 out of 10 cancers (reference ASCO) can be prevented from life style management, maintaining healthy weight, regular exercise, proper diet and regular screening can prevents you from developing cancer

3. There is no evidence that proves that eating too much sugar can cause cancer. however, all diseased cells and normal cells grows by consuming too much sugar content. Also, consuming higher quantity of sugar can be linked with high intake of calories, which can lead to increase in weight. Increase in weight will ultimately leads to obesity which is the main cause of many diseases including diabetes and other health related problems. 

4. Cancer Treatments have severe side effects but there are many supportive therapy medicines available which can ease the symptoms and complications caused by cancer treatment. 

Supportive care can help a person feel more comfortable at any stage of illness. People who receive treatment for cancer and treatment to ease side effects at the same time often have less severe symptoms and better quality of life.
